Hadestown, Decent Modern Adaptation

Hadestown 1

You’re probably wondering — why Hadestown? Well, my interest in Greek mythology actually started with God of War. Those who’ve played it will remember that iconic moment in God of War III when Kratos confronts Hades. That scene stuck with me.

Then last year, Netflix released a series called Chaos, which gave a very unique take on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. I loved it. It was one of the best modern adaptations I’ve seen — but Netflix, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to renew it. Terrible decision.

That’s where my interest comes from. So when I saw Hadestown was playing, I knew I had to go. Even though the production itself wasn’t the most extravagant thing I’ve seen, I was sure the story would pull me in — and it did.

What stood out most to me was how sharply they portrayed Persephone’s shift in personality — from her life above ground to the moment she was taken by Hades. That contrast was powerful.
Another striking moment was Hades being moved by Orpheus’s song. Watching this dark, commanding king soften emotionally — without ever fully shedding his darkness or authority — was something special.

In the Netflix version, Eurydice was a dominant, driving force. In the musical, she was much more in the background — a reflection of the original mythology. Same goes for Orpheus. Neither overshadowed the show, and that felt true to the myth. Hades and Persephone, on the other hand, had real weight. Every time they appeared on stage, you felt their presence.

All in all, it was a great experience. Right now, London is incredibly rich in musical theater — from timeless classics to creative takes on pop culture and mythology.
Unfortunately, most influencers or so-called cultural tastemakers in Turkey haven’t discovered this world yet, which makes it harder for people back home to realize what they’re missing.

Hopefully, that changes over time. But if you ever find yourself in London — do yourself a favor and see a musical.
